JVC RC 838 JW BoomBox
JVC RC-838 JW boombox circa 1979 just back from my repair tech 🔈 It had some bad switches and weird right channel stuff but she’s working 100% now. There’s some minor cosmetic wear but other than that she’s 💯.
From the nets;
The RC-838 is an icon in the ghettoblaster world. Sold by JVC in 1979, it was very well-built for its time. The PLL tuner (Phase-Locked Loop) provides great reception. And its VU-meters are big, bold, and much more accurate than the ones on other boomboxes. Many collectors install LED's to illuminate them.
The model name varies depending on which country it was sold in: RC-838L, RC-838LB, and RC-838JW. Its dimensions are 20" x 12.5" x 6.25". It has 6.5" woofers and 2" tweeters. Power output is 2.4 watts per channel according to the FTC standard, which measures the minimum output across a very wide frequency range. JVC says its maximum output is 5 watts per channel. The tape deck's wow and flutter rating is 0.07% WRMS.
This model has a very unique spatial stereo feature called BiPhonic. There is also an "Expand" mode, which is similar to the "Wide" mode found on many other boomboxes.
